Break It Down

Scott Couchenour • December 20, 2020

Don't tell your plans. Show your results.

The expression of who you are and what you stand for is what the world absolutely needs. It's your great and glorious impact. You are one of billions alive on this earth. The one thing that sets you apart from all the others is you.

Let no one impose their design on the design that was uniquely created just for you. One of the greatest regrets of the dying, according to conversations with those who knew they had only two weeks to live, was that they were not true to who they were. They tried all their lives to be what they felt other people wanted them to be.

So this great and glorious impact. Where do you start?

DREAM BIG

Start with a big dream. The bigger the better. Extract any thoughts of "how" when you're dreaming. In the dreaming, there are no limits of time, money, resources, talent, or energy. When you get done dreaming your big dream, take it to another level. It's likely not big enough. The bigger the dream, the greater the possibilities that you will see the real impact you can have.

The dream is just the beginning. It gets you going in a direction - any direction. The key to remember is that at this stage, it doesn't matter so much where you're headed, but that you have the car moving. It's always easier to steer a car where it needs to go when it's moving, than when it's stationary.

BREAK IT DOWN

So take this big dream and start breaking it down. Reverse engineer it. In James Clear's words, "decide the type of person you want to be and prove it to yourself with small wins." Any large task, when broken down into doable tasks, can be accomplished. So, take a look at your current way of doing things. Compare that to your big dream and ask these key questions:

  • What needs to be added to what you're already doing?
  • What needs to stop happening?
  • What needs to change?
  • What can stay the same?

Take one of the bullet points above and make a list.

Take one item from the list and break it down into smaller tasks, step by step.

Continue breaking it down until you have tasks that you feel you can accomplish.

Stick with me over time. We'll take a look at this process in more depth. But for now, you need to understand one key principle:

Just because you have a plan all broken down into doable tasks, doesn't mean it's magically going to happen on its own. You still need to execute those tasks.

CHECK IN

You will increase your probability of success by 95% if you have a regular check in with someone to whom you've committed your actions. This is backed by research and it know it to be true personally and I've seen it happen in the lives of my clients.

ACTION STEP

  • Do you have someone to whom you can commit and meet to check in? If you don't and want to make a significant impact on at least the next 90 days, check out THE 95 CLUB.

Retirement can be a challenging transition for business owners. After years of building, managing, and leading their companies, stepping away often brings a mix of emotions, including uncertainty, anxiety, and even fear. As an advisor, your role is to guide clients through this significant life change, helping them reframe retirement not as an ending but as a new chapter filled with possibilities. Managing client expectations involves helping them understand that retirement isn’t just about leaving behind their business. It’s about opening the door to opportunities they may have never explored.

You start with a plan. You feel the momentum building. The first few steps feel good, maybe even great. Then, like clockwork, you find yourself right back where you started. It’s frustrating, confusing, and honestly, exhausting. Why does it keep happening? And how do you make progress that sticks this time? Here’s the truth: real change doesn’t happen because you’ve found the perfect strategy. It happens because you finally stop flirting with progress and commit to what’s already within you.

Conflict within families or stakeholder groups can quietly grow, damaging relationships and disrupting progress if left unchecked. Recognizing the early warning signs of conflict is key to addressing issues before they escalate into larger problems. This is particularly crucial when dealing with high-stakes situations like family businesses, succession planning, or shared financial decisions.

For as long as anyone could remember, Charlie was the owner of a local hardware store, Charlie's Fix-It Shop. It wasn’t just any hardware store—it was the place everyone went when they needed something fixed, something built, or simply a friendly chat. For over forty years, Charlie greeted his customers with a smile, offered advice on all things tools and gadgets, and kept the town in tip-top shape. But now, Charlie was getting older.
