How To Assess Excellence
One weekly question is all it takes
You and I have at least one thing in common. We both wake up to another day. It’s something that has been ingrained in us since birth. A new day means waking from our sleep and starting the day.
This waking has become a routine for you. Some days you may wake later than others but the routine still stands.
I bet you haven’t yet gone a whole day without waking (unless you were seriously hospitalized, in which case would be very unusual circumstances.)
So with that routine firmly established, I propose a question that you can ask yourself that will quickly give you a general, overall assessment of the level of excellence you are experiencing in your life. Here’s the question:
On a scale of 1-10,
how eager have you been
to wake up and face the day?
(1 being very much not eager and 10 being very eager)
Even if you are not be a morning person, the question still remains. Even if you don’t like waking, what is your level of eagerness to get to the things and people and responsibilities of your life? I believe it's possible to have a hard time waking and still be eager to get going on what makes your heart sing.
The key is not to pivot your life based on one answer. Ask yourself this question weekly. If you are in the 1-5 range over weeks and weeks, something needs to change.
Excellence produces a sense of purpose in your life. Even when the road is hard and you don’t look forward to waking, there is still an eagerness to keep going because you are so tuned into your purpose.
ACTION STEP
- Make a commitment to assess your eagerness over the past 7 days every Sunday night. After 4 or 5 weeks, take an average.
- If you need to change something to get your numbers above 5, let’s talk. Email me at coach@servingstrong.com
